A large or ignored cavity can quickly become a serious problem. Left unchecked it can easily result in the total loss of the tooth. Of course, losing a tooth does more than just compromise your ability to chew food effectively. It can also slur your speech and eventually lead to alignment issues with the surrounding teeth.

At Ortho*Dental, Inc., we will first want to conduct a thorough examination of your mouth and take a few X-rays. If you have struggled in the past with gum disease or have had a tooth extracted, it may have resulted in a loss of bone structure. In a case like this, we might recommend a bone graft procedure be performed in advance of the implant.

The implant procedure is usually performed outpatient basis. Most people choose to be deeply sedated for their own comfort. This means you will need to arrange to have someone drive you and help you at home, while you’re recovering.

During the procedure a small incision is made in your gums to gain direct access to your jawbone. A narrow channel is made in the bone and a titanium abutment is screwed into place. Titanium is known to be biologically safe. The implant will eventually fuse with the surrounding bone structure to create a very strong anchor for an eventual crown.

Once your gums have healed and the implant has been integrated into your jaw structure, we will fit the implanted abutment with a crown. This will restore the full form and function of your lost tooth for many years to come.
